People do not believe that the attackers of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida Khanam broke into her official residence to steal anything, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque has said.

He said that the intelligence agencies had been instructed to run an in-depth investigation to find the “godfathers” behind the attacks.

Mozammel Haque, who is also president of the Home Ministry’s law and order committee, talked to the reporters after attending a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday.

He said the government decided to bring upazila complexes across the country under security and CCTV surveillance. There will be guards at the residences of the UNOs till 5am.

UNO Wahida Khanam was seriously injured in an attack by miscreants who broke into her official residence in Dinajpur’s Ghoraghat upazila in the early hours of Thursday. Her father was also injured in the attack.

Suspects nabbed by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said during primary interrogation that they went there to attempt robbery, the statement which was rejected right away by Bangladesh Administrative Services Association (BASA). Many people did not believe the statement as well.

Wahida is now undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital (NINH) in Dhaka.  Doctors say she is recovering from the injuries slowly.
