Human and legal rights watchdog Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) wants effective action against those involved in the irregularities and corruption in the health sector through judicial investigation.

They made the demand in a press statement issued on Tuesday, signed by ASK Chairman advocate ZI Khan Panna.

The statement mentioned one instance of irregularities, saying that in June, an intelligence agency received information that Toma Construction had supplied fewer face masks to the Central Medical Stores Depot (CMSD), under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) than was required by the contract between the two parties.

These incidents bring to the fore irregularities, mismanagement and lack of effective monitoring in the sector, the statement said.

Meanwhile, the DGHS approved the provision of medical treatment, including Covid-19 tests, to the Regent Hospital without its licence renewed, it added.

Similar irregularities and fraud took place at the JKG Health Care centre in Dhaka, the statement said.
