Fake Covid-19 test reports may tarnish the country’s image in foreign countries, according to Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
The minister for the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry made the observation in a press briefing at his official residence on Tuesday morning.
“Exemplary punishment is needed for the people involved in issuing fake Covid-19 test results,” said the ruling party’s general secretary, adding that surveillance needs to be increased to prevent crimes like this.
Quader also urged for an increase in testing to curb the spread of coronavirus in the country.
Quader’s comments came after the fake Covid-19 scams of multiple organizations came to light recently.
On Sunday, police arrested Dr Sabrina, the JKG Health Care chairman, for her suspected involvement in a recently exposed Covid-19 test scam in Dhaka.
On July 6, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided Regent Hospital’s Uttara and Mirpur branches. They found that the hospital had issued over 10,000 Covid-19 test reports, more than half of which were fake. Regent Group boss Md Shahed is still at large.
