Bangladesh in dire need of action to slow Covid-19

New cases and death due to the pandemic is on a continuous rise since its first detection on March 8

Update : 16 Jun 2020, 10:02 PM

Bangladesh is needs fast and effective action to slow the spread of Covid-19 as the number of confirmed cases and deaths are rising every day, according to a graphical analysis of new cases by international volunteer coalition EndCoronavirus (ECV).

In order to highlight the status of the pandemic in various countries, ECV plotted normalized daily new cases of Covid-19 against time, with a seven-day average. Countries where the number of new cases has dropped to negligible levels are classified as “winning,” while countries where the number of new cases is rising or plateauing are classed as “need action.”

Unsurprisingly, Bangladesh has been placed in the “need action” category as the number of new cases in the country has been steadily on the rise. However, a closer look at the trends in other countries in the same category paints an even more alarming picture.

In other “need action” countries, such as the US, Bosnia and Albania, the graph has both peaks and troughs. The troughs – drops in the number of new cases – likely correspond to strict implementation of lockdown measures and health guidelines, and they are followed by peaks when these preventive measures are relaxed.

However, there are no troughs in the graph for Bangladesh. Straight from the beginning, there is a steep, upward climb that does not seem to have been impeded at any point. It is almost as if the two-month-long lockdown from March 26 had no effect at all.

Few other countries show the rate of infection increasing in such a fashion, aside from India, Mexico and some countries in Africa and South America.

ECV has been operating since February 29 to develop effective, community-based solutions to end the novel coronavirus pandemic. They are an affiliate of the New England Complex Systems Institute (NECSI).
