The Bangladesh Indigenous Women Network (BIWN) on Saturday demanded speedy action from the state to ensure justice for the missing activist Kalpana Chakma.
Friday marked the 24th anniversary of Kalpana Chakma’s enforced disappearance.
BIWN issued a press release on Saturday in this regard and demanded justice for Kalpana.
This year many organizations are virtually registering their protests against the injustice done to Kalpana Chakma and have been organising a series of discussions in her remembrance.
The online news outlet IPG News has demanded justice for Kalpana through music programs with indigenous artists and bands.
Hill Women’s Federation and Hilly Students’ Council have also demanded action over the abduction of Kalpana Chakma.
BIWN in its press release said: “We think that injustice cannot prevail in a democratic country for too long. Proper actions must be taken to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War in Bangladesh and to rid the country of injustice.”
“We have only one demand, that is to stop delaying justice in the name of investigation and bring those responsible under the law,” the press release added.
Kalpana, then 23, was kidnapped on June 12, 1996, from her village home in New Lalyaghona of Baghaichari, Rangamati.
Her brother, Kalindi Kumar Chakma — an eyewitness to the abduction — filed a case a few days later.
The prime accused in the case are Lieutenant Ferdous (Ferdous Kaysar Khan), Village Defense Party (VDP) member Nurul Huq and police constable Saleh Ahmed.
So far, three reports — two final reports and one judicial inquiry commission report—have been placed before the court regarding the abduction.
