UN Peacekeepers: Bangladesh Police maintaining peace in conflict-ridden countries


Bangladesh Police have been taking part in peacekeeping missions for more than 30 years

May 29 is the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. Bangladesh Police have been working for more than 30 years with a very good reputation in maintaining peace in various conflict-ridden countries of the world.

In this noble journey of peacekeeping, Bangladesh Police have helped pave the way for peaceful resolution of internationally disputed issues in a neutral manner in full compliance with international law and order, and full respect for the independence of conflict-ridden countries, according to the UN Charter.

At present, there are 657 police personnel working in different countries including four formed police units and individual police officers. Among them 158 are female police personnel.

Bangladesh Police headquarter disclosed such information through a press release on Friday.

This journey of Bangladesh Police started in 1989 through Namibia peacekeeping operation. Bangladesh Police have been working with the United Nations in a multi-dimensional way for a long time.

Bangladesh police formed a self-contained specialized police unit in 2005. A full-fledged female police unit was deployed for peacekeeping missions in 2010, which is a significant milestone in the history of peacekeeping.

At the end of 2013, Bangladesh Police sent specialized contingents to South Sudan on a 24 hours notice under intermission co-operation on an emergency basis, which is a rare event in the history of peacekeeping.

The press release also said that around 20,000 Bangladesh Police personnel have served in 22 peacekeeping missions so far.

Bangladesh Police members have helped increase the institutional capability as well as to provide assistance and security in the process of rehabilitation of the internally displaced and refugees in Haiti, East Timor, Kosovo, Bosnia, Sudan, among others.

The peacekeeping members of the Bangladesh Police have not limited the scope of their work there, but the example of humanity in foreign countries has also been praised in the international arena. 

Distributing food and medical care to the helpless seems to have become a regular part of the peacekeeping work of Bangladesh Police.

Bangladesh Police has a history of sacrifice in this journey of maintaining peace in conflict-ridden countries. 

Around 22 members of the police family including Additional Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Rowshan Ara were martyred in different parts of the world while doing their duty in UN missions. 

Many policemen were injured in different times while trying to maintain peace, the released read.

By participating in the UN international peacekeeping operations for a long time, Bangladesh Police has not only brought in foreign currency for the country, it has also brought exceptional honour for the motherland.

Bangladesh Police is committed to upholding this historic trend and experience of peacekeeping according to the UN Charter in any part of the world.
