The government has formed four committees to the assess the damages at the Sundarbans due to the super cyclone Amphan.
“The committees have been asked to submit their reports within the next three working days,” Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Shahab Uddin said on Thursday during an online media call.
He said “As Amphan hit the Sundarbans, the committees will assess the damages done to Sundarbans by the cyclone. The ministry will take necessary initiatives after getting the reports.”
The committees have formed under the leadership of assistant forest conservator of range office.
According to the preliminary reports, the cyclone damaged more than 10 wooden jetties and tin sheds of more than 30 staff barracks in the Sundarbans, said the minister.
He said “The tidal wave caused by the cyclone has inundated more than 60 fresh water ponds used by the local community. The saline water of the ponds will be removed and made usable. Re-excavation of some ponds will be taken if applicable.”
The minister said,“Among the trees in the Sundarbans, Keora tree have suffered the most.
“The damaged or broken trees of the Sundarbans will not be removed. The forest will heal itself,” he added.
