Awami League (AL) is set to celebrate March 17, birthday of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the starting day of Mujib Year, by holding special payers in religious institutions, distributing food to the underprivileged, fireworks, and placing floral wreaths, according to AL general Secretary Obaidul Quader.

Quader made the statement on Sunday afternoon at Awami League president’s party office at Dhanmondi, after a secretariat level meeting of the AL central working committee.

Bangabandhu was born on March 17, 1920 in Tungipara village of Gopalganj district. The day is a public holiday, and is also observed as National Children’s Day, due to Bangabandhu’s fondness of spending time with children on his birthday.

As part of the celebration, the national flag will be hoisted atop the Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi, and at all party offices at 6:30am, told Quader.

At 7am, leaders of Awami League and its affiliate organizations will place a floral wreath before Bangabandhu’s portrait at Bangabandhu Museum, which occupies the site of his old house in Dhanmondi road 32.

At 10am, a delegation of Awami League, led by Prime Minister and party president Sheikh Hasina, will place a floral wreath at the grave of her father in Tungipara.

All religious institutes including mosques, mandirs, churches, and pagodas will hold special prayers for Bangabandhu on the day, said Quader.

The Dhaka city AL north will distribute food to the underprivileged at Karail slum located in Banani, and Dhaka city south will distribute food at Baitul Mukarram mosque.

The day will be capped off with fireworks at 23 Bangabandhu avenue, the central party office, and Dhanmondi 32 at 8pm.
