Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called on the women of Bangladesh to build themselves in a manner that empowers them.

She made the statement on Sunday, while inaugurating the function of the International Women’s Day at Osmani Memorial Auditorium.

"Empowerment cannot be attained by force, it’s the matter of attaining through one's own capability," said Sheikh Hasina.

Speaking on rape incidents, she said that this is not an issue specifically for Bangladesh, but rather the whole world.

"I think that we need awareness, the men also need to step forward regarding this matter, because the rapists are men," the Prime Minister said.

She added "I don’t want to call them humans. I want to call them inferior to animals. The whole society has to take steps against them."

Stressing the importance of economic freedom, she urged women in the country not to sit idle at home.

Sheikh Hasina said the government has passed laws intended to protect women and children from all types of violence.

She added that women are now playing significant roles in politics, diplomacy, education, art and culture, research, trade and commerce, sports and games, investigation and adventures.

Sheikh Hasina also remembered Begum Sheikh Fazilatun Nesa Mujib, who worked for the country along with Bangabandhu, giving him inspiration, courage and suggestions all the time.

“Bangamata arranged the marriage of the girl victims of the Liberation War whose families were unwilling to take them back,” she said.

The prime minister handed over “Joyeeta Sammanana” to five women for outstanding contributions to their respective fields.

A documentary on Bangabandhu and women's development was screened at the event.
