The Ministry of Home Affairs has urged the media not to disseminate any fake information regarding the expelled Jubo Mohila League leader Shamima Noor Papia, who has been implicated in three cases.
The home ministry, in a statement on Thursday, requested the print, electronic, online and social media not to carry any "disgraceful, fabricated and untrue" news involving important persons of society and Papia.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on February 22 arrested four people, including Papia alias Peu and her husband Mofizur Rahman alias Moti Suman, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Since Papia's arrest, different media have been publishing fabricated and disgraceful news involving important persons and Papia quoting sources at the law enforcement agencies, the statement signed by Sharif Mahmud Apu, public relations officer of the home ministry, read.
"It is creating a negative impact in the public mind and is creating social indiscipline," it said.
Publication of disgraceful, fabricated and untrue news involving important persons and suspects detained by law enforcement agencies in different drives is a legally punishable offence, read the statement.
Papia, who was expelled from the position of general secretary of Jubo Mohila League’s Narsingdi district following her arrest, and her husband are currently on a 15-day remand in three cases against them for supplying counterfeit banknotes and drugs and their involvement in other illicit activities.
