Marking the centennial birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, some 10 million saplings will be planted across Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen made the revelation at a press conference on Wednesday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s participation at the 25th UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Madrid, the capital of Spain.

"You will be happy to know that we will start a year-long Mujib Borsha on March 17, 2020 (to celebrate the centenary birth anniversary of Bangabandhu).

In Mujib Borsha, we will plant 1 crore (10 million) saplings across the country,” he told reporters at the state guest house Padma.

The foreign minister also urged all to plant saplings in their backyards.

He said that following the influx of tens of thousands of Rohingya people, forests spanning over 6,800 acres of land that used to be a natural habitat for elephants have been destroyed.

"All are gone. Trees adjacent to that land were also destroyed. They have felled the trees; deforestation was widespread, in order to make way for livelihoods, and meet their needs. A kind of disaster took place," he said.
