HujiB members attempted to assassinate Anwar Choudhury, the then UK high commissioner in Dhaka, at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal in Sylhet on May 21, 2004. Choudhury escaped death, but three people were killed in the attack which left over 70 others injured.
A Sylhet court on December 23, 2008 sentenced the trio to death and two others to life-time imprisonment for their role in the attack. The High Court upheld the sentences in February 2016.
Later in the same month, the death row convicts appealed to the Appellate Division but to no avail, as the death penalty was upheld there as well. The full verdict was published on January 17.
The death warrant was read out to Mufti Hannan on February 6 and his review petition against the sentence was rejected on March 19.
On March 21, the Appellate Division released the full text of its verdict confirming the death penalties.
The HujiB militant group was formed in 1992 and claims to have carried out at least 14 attacks, killing more than 100 people in the pursuit of “establishing Shariah law in Bangladesh.” The group later split into three factions.
The militant leader, who was reportedly blessed by the then BNP-Jamaat government, was arrested along with his wife and four children from the capital's Badda area on October 31, 2005.
Mufti Hannan also carries death sentence for the blasts at Ramna Batamul during the Pohela Boishakh celebrations in 2001, in which 10 people were killed. HujiB claims the festival is un-Islamic.
He was given life-term imprisonment for the attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000.
The trial in the much-talked case filed over the August 21 grenade attack in 2004 is now underway. The family members of death row convict Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HujiB) leader Mufti Abdul Hannan have met him at the Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur.
Four members, including Mufti Hannan’s wife, two daughters and his elder brother, entered the jail around 7:45am and came out around 8:50am on Wednesday after meeting him, Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail Mizanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.
Mufti Hannan’s mother had earlier informed that she would not meet her son.
Hannan’s wife Jakia Parvin told the reporters: “My husband is well and normal. He has been sentenced in false cases. He has no link to militancy.”
Mizanur Rahman also informed that none of the family members of Mufti Hannan’s associate Sharif Shahedul Bipul came to meet him at the jail.
On the other hand, Sylhet Central Jail authorities have completed all necessary preparations to hang Mufti Hannan’s another aide Delwar Hossain Ripon.
Confirming the matter, Senior Jail Super Md Sogir Mia said: “Family members of Ripon including his father Abdul Yusuf, mother Azizunnecha, brother Azmul Islam and his wife met with Ripon Tuesday and other members of his family areon their way to meet Ripon today.”
“Eight to ten hangmen are ready to carry out the execution of Ripon,” he added.
The jail authorities on Tuesday sent separate letters to the families of Mufti Hannan and his associate Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul, asking them to meet their respective family members in jail.
The jail authorities have completed all necessary preparations to execute the two HujiB men.
The mercy petitions of the duo and the other death-row convict Md Delwar Hossain Ripon were rejected by President Abdul Hamid on April 8. Ripon has been kept at the Sylhet Jail.
