Sadharan Bima Corporation (SBC) has handed over $14.5 million (Tk122.50 crore) insurance money for the crash landing of Dash 8Q 400 aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines in Yangon.
Managing Director Syed Shahriar Ahsan of the insurance company yesterday said the payment was made last week, reports Bangla Tribune.
The decision was taken at the 598th meeting of insurance company on June 19, he added.
"The aircraft was not Biman's own. For this reason, the compensation amount was transferred to the owning company. This money includes the compensation for the loss of the aircraft, the injured passengers, and the crews," he said.
When contacted, Farhat Hasan Jamil, acting managing director, and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, said: "The aircraft was procured on lease, it's not our own. So, the owner received the compensation."
On May 8, the S2-AGQ-Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 skidded off the runway in Yangon during landing, due to bad weather.
A total of 19 people, including a child, and the plane’s two pilots, were injured, and taken to an airport clinic for treatment.
