Tasneem Khalil, a Sweden-based journalist specialising in terrorism, provided this rough translation of the original Arabic broadcast: "A security official/source to Amaq: Tens of dead and injured among Bangladeshi troops following the explosion of an explosive device at a gathering of troops/forces near a checkpoint in Sylhet, northeast of Bangladesh."
The attack came as law enforcement and army para-commandos were carrying out a joint operation at a militant hideout in Shibbari area under Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet district. The raid started around 9am Saturday, after having had the building cordoned off since 3am Friday.
Although the para-commandos were able to extract 78 people stuck in the building, As of 3am Sunday they were unable to apprehend the militants. The terrorists had laid explosives all around the building, an army spokesperson said.
Police said the suicide bomber may have arrived in a motorcycle. The bomb was set off in the middle of a gathering of about 500-600 people who were standing right outside the police cordon as onlookers.
