Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda has assured that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will only be use in the upcoming 11th general polls after the technology gets legal approval.
He made the comment while addressing the inauguration ceremony of election officers’ training at the Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in Dhaka on Saturday.
Adding that the Election Commission must ensure that the EVMs are error free before using them in the next parliamentary election, the CEC said: “Use of this technology cannot be forced, but it needs to be introduced as properly as possible.
“Before using the EMVs in the next polls, the technology must get legal approval.”
He continued: “The voters might have questions about this technology, and we will make a serious effort to clear any confusion regarding the use of EVMs.
“Political parties, which are commenting against the EVMs, should do so after learning thoroughly about this technology. Bangladesh should gradually move towards modern technology, and phase out traditional methods of organizing polls.”
KM Nurul Huda also said the 11th parliamentary polls would be held in the last weeks of December, 2018 or at the beginning of January, 2019.
