Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has handed over savings certificates of Tk20 lakh to each of the families of the two students killed in a road accident this week.
She handed over the money to the victims’ parents at her office on Thursday.
The prime minister conveyed her sympathy to the bereaved families.
The duo – Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib – students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College—were killed when a bus ploughed into a crowd, on Airport Road, on Sunday.
Following the tragedy, outraged students have been taking to Dhaka’s streets, for five consecutive days, demanding safe roads and punishment for those responsible for the accident.
The students blockaded the roads, crippling the city. Guardians and others have supported them in their ongoing protest.
On Thursday, students from other parts of the country joined in the protests.
Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said if the draft of the Road Transport Act is enacted into law, then it will be possible to ensure the highest punishment for those responsible for road accidents—and discipline will be restored on the roads.
