Shishu Mela reopens as DNCC Wonderland

Update : 20 Feb 2017, 04:11 PM
Shyamoli Shishu Mela has been reopened under a new name – DNCC Wonderland – three months after it was sealed off by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). “We decided to reopen the park after considering how the public expressed their concerns and the new deal proposed by the lease holding company,” DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq said after reopening it on Sunday. Senior DNCC officials and the park’s leaseholder Via Media General Manager Mustafizur Rahman, among others, attended the ceremony. The Public Works Department handed over the public park to the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) in 1985. Via Media Limited had leased Gulshan public park from the DCC and set up Wonderland Amusement Park. In 2012, the capital's development authority Rajuk demolished Wonderland for breaching the contract. DNCC Public Relation Department said the city corporation formed a committee to deal with the leaseholder company after the park's shutdown. Later, the committee collected dues worth Tk2,185,000, including fines, and recommended a new rent of Tk111,000 per month. The previous rent was Tk4,027. DNCC has rented the park for one year after collecting an advance of Tk42,21,31 as per the new rate. However, the operator company will not set new fares for any of the rides, officials said. On November 26 last year, the park was sealed off for failing to pay dues and not renewing the lease contract for 12 years. The authorities sealed off the park during a drive conducted to recover the park from its operator Via Media Limited.
