DMP to take stern legal action against undisciplined crowds on Feb 21

Update : 19 Feb 2017, 07:40 PM
“We are tightening our security measures this year to dissuade people from causing problems. This is especially because last year, a political party leader wanted to enter through the Doyel Chattar, even though it was the wrong way. We will take action against people who cause such chaos this year,” said DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia to journalists on Sunday. He made this statement after he visited the Shaheed Minar area around 11:30am to check on the preparations being made by law enforcers. “There will be only one public entrance at the Polashi intersection for people to come and offer wreaths to language martyrs at the Shaheed Minar. Four-tier security steps have also been arranged around the Shaheed Minar for peaceful observance of the day,” he added. “Some 8,000 uniformed and plainclothes policemen will be deployed in the areas. Four watch towers and additional CCTV cameras will also be installed from Polashi intersection to Doyel Chattar and a control room will be set up to monitor all the law enforcement arrangements,” Asaduzzaman explained. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and other law enforcement agencies will also be present. “People have to pass through metal detectors at Palashi to enter the Shaheed Minar premises,” he added. After placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minar, people will have to exit using the roads in front of Doyel Chattar and Chankharpul. Some roads around the Shaheed Minar will be closed from 8am on Monday till the next day and the area has already been emptied of hawkers. When questioned, Asaduzzaman said: “There have been no specific militant attack threats, but we have taken adequate security measures.”
