A staggering 12 gold bars cumulatively weighing 1.3kg were found in the stomach of a man at the Benapole customs check post.

The gold was discovered at Benapole’s travel tax checking point Tuesday morning by tax intelligence agents.

The man in question, Mohiuddin, is a 27-year-old hailing from Cumilla’s Titas upazila.

“We had prior intelligence that a gold smuggler named Mohiuddin would try to cross the border to India with a lot of gold. We also had information on his hometown and passport number,” said a tax intelligence agent.

“When he tried to cross, we apprehended him from the Benapole customs immigration check post. We then had him x-rayed and found 12 gold bars inside him, and subsequently medicated him until he evicted them from his bowels,” the agent told journalists.

Benapole Customs Deputy Commissioner Saifur Rahman confirmed the matter, adding that Mohiuddin would be handed over to Benapole Port police station after questioning.
