16 Dakhil examinees injured in bus accident

Update : 16 Feb 2017, 06:05 PM
Sixteen madrasa students sitting for the Dakhil examinations have been injured when the mini-bus carrying them fell into a roadside ditch in Chokoria upazila. It is unclear why the bus veered off the road and crashed into the ditch on the Chokoria-Badarkhali road on Thursday morning. Chokoria police's Officer-in-Charge Jahirul Islam confirmed that all 16 passengers were Dakhil examinees. Fifteen managed to attend the examination after receiving first aid at Chokoria Upazila Health Complex, but one of them could not as he had suffered severe injuries. OC Jahirul could not identify the student. Bus accidents claim thousands of lives every year in Bangladesh. Experts mainly blame unskilled drivers, reckless driving, poorly maintained vehicles and rundown roads for the accidents. A report released in February said at least 416 people had been killed in road crashes across the country in January alone. According to another report, 3,412 people were killed and 8,572 others injured in 2,998 road accidents last year. Earlier this week, 25 people were killed in two separate accidents in Narsingdi and Faridpur.
