Quota reform: DU VC expresses solidarity with protesters

Expressing solidarity with the demonstrators, Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman has said the demand of students is logical. He made the remarks while speaking at a press briefing at his office on Wednesday. "We have asked the government to take quick measures and give assurance to the students so that they can return to normal life," he said. He also urged law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of the students. Referring to the attack on a female student of Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall, Prof Akhtaruzzaman said: "The university administration is adopting a zero tolerance stance against such incidents and a probe committee has been formed to look into the matter." Wishing anonymity, a high-ranking official of the university, said the order for temporary expulsion of Chhatra League leader Iffat Jahan Esha has been signed. Talking about the attack on his official residence, the vice-chancellor said: "I feel safe in the hands of my students." Earlier on Monday, a group of protesters demanding reforms in the quota system in public service broke the main entrance of the vice-chancellor’s residence and ransacked several rooms and furniture.
