Update : 19 Mar 2018, 01:15 AM
University students and jobseekers yesterday staged demonstrations across the country, demanding reform of the existing quota system in government recruitment tests including Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination. In Dhaka, several thousand students of different universities and job seekers gathered at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture on the Dhaka University (DU) campus to press home their demands. They also demanded the withdrawal of a case filed against 700 unidentified demonstrators on charges of vandalizing government vehicles on March 14. The students, under the banner of Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Sangrokkon Parishad (General Student’s Right Protection Council), brought out a procession from the DU’s Central Library and paraded through different streets at Nilkhet and Shahbagh and then took position at the base of Raju Sculpture. Hasan Al Mamun, convener of the council, announced that they would hold a “street cleaning program with their academic credentials hanging from their necks” from Shahbagh to Central Shaheed Minar on March 25 and a rally at Central Shaheed Minar on March 29. It is a logical demand. We will continue our movement until our five-point demand is met and police withdraws the false case,” he said. On Feb 17, students and jobseekers started the movement to press their five-point demand that include introduction of unified age limit in government jobs, review of quota system in government recruitment processes including BCS examinations, stopping undue benefits by jobseekers in the name of quota, filling vacant posts from merit lists if the candidates from quota are not found, and bringing down the existing 56% quota to 10%. At Rajshahi University, hundreds of students also brought out a procession around 10am to press home the same demand. The procession started from the university library and ended at Martyred Intellectual Memorial of the campus. Meanwhile, students of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology formed a human chain and organized a protest rally at the university library around 11am, demanding reform of the quota system and withdrawal of the case against the protesters.
