Government not planning to end quota system

Update : 09 Mar 2018, 12:29 AM
Ministry of Public Administration Senior Secretary Dr Mozammel Haque Khan has said the government has no plans to put an end to the existing quota system for government jobs. Speaking to journalists at his office at around 12:30pm on Thursday, he also said: “On Tuesday March 6 a notice went out from the Ministry of Public Administration which stated that in the case of direct applications for government jobs, if qualified applicants are not found on the list of quota applicants, a fitting general applicant will be chosen instead.” “This is not supposed to amend or change the quota system. Government jobs including BCS have a combined reservation quota of 57% for different groups. The government has no plans to end this system. However, in the wake of Tuesday’s notice, quotas will experience a 10% reduction anyway,” he continued. Asked about the number of vacancies in government sector jobs, Mozammel said: “Employment into the government sector is an ongoing process. There are currently 14 lakh government officials and employees. Every day, 3,000-4,000 of them retire or quit, creating regular vacancies. As a result, it is impossible to predict just when there might be a vacancy in a given sector or post. “However, despite regular vacancies there are a few technicalities regarding employment into those posts. The process of applying for a government job is complicated and time-consuming. As a result, it might not be possible to fill up a post right away despite having qualified corresponding applicants. This should also ease up as a result of this recent change.” The notice published on March 6 will ease the 2010 freedom fighters’ quota to fill the positions of 600 midwives and 4,000 senior staff nurses. With the current directive, meritorious applicants will be prioritized. According to a survey conducted in 2016 by the survey and research cell of the Ministry of Public Administration, there are a total of 359,261 vacancies in the government sector.
