Nineteen envoys of 15 countries have visited the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas in Cox’s Bazar upon invitations from the Bangladesh High Commission in India’s New Delhi.
A plane carrying the Delhi-based diplomats landed at Cox’s Bazar Airport around 10am on Sunday.
Around 11:30am, they held a meeting with the district’s Deputy Commissioner Md Ali Hossain at his office on the Rohingya crisis and its present situation.
Ali briefed the visiting diplomats on the security, health services, foods, clothing, shelter, and sanitation facilities designated for the Rohingyas.
The ambassadors praised the initiatives and thanked the Bangladesh government for its support to the refugees, officials said.
Later around 1:30pm, they visited the refugee camps, including the two at Balukhali and Kutupalong.
During the visit, the diplomats talked to the Rohingyas, specially women and children, about their plight and current situation.
Local administration officials said the ambassadors had assured the refugees of their safe return home.
The ambassadors, high commissioners and chargés d'affaires were from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Mauritius, Portugal, Slovenia, Ukraine, Zambia, Nigeria, Czech Republic, Austria, Ghana, New Zealand, Kenya and Fiji.
As there are no permanent missions of these countries in Bangladesh, the nonresident envoys to Bangladesh discharge their duties from New Delhi.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali and Deputy High Commissioner ATM. Rokebul Haque had accompanied the envoys, along with other officials.
