Chief Justice Sinha, wife get Australian visa for three years

Update : 08 Oct 2017, 08:26 AM
Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha and his wife Sushoma Sinha have received Australian visas for three years, according to an official of the Supreme Court. The official said the couple may travel to Australia very soon to visit their elder daughter Suchona Sinha. The news of him getting the visa comes four days after his month-long leave on health grounds started, sparking numerous controversial responses and speculations from various quarters. The Supreme Court official said the chief justice on October 5 had applied for visa for five years, but received three years’ visa from the Australian embassy in Dhaka.

After Justice Sinha went on leave on October 3, Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, the most senior judge after him in the Appellate Division, was made the acting chief justice. There were rumours that the chief justice would be travelling abroad during his leave, which Attorney General Mahbubey Alam described as a personal matter of Justice Sinha. Justice Sinha was widely criticised by government ministers and ruling Awami League leaders for his observations made in the verdict that scrapped the 16th Amendment to the Constitution.
