Biman flight makes emergency landing as tyre bursts mid air

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Oman to Chittagong was forced to make an emergency landing at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Thursday as one of its rear left wheels had burst during the flight. All 149 people on board the Boeing 737, including seven crew, were unharmed.

“One of the nose wheels burst shortly after take off from Muscat Airport,” Biman General Manager Shakil Meraj told the Dhaka Tribune. "The pilot had noticed the damage and chose to land at Dhaka airport, which has emergency landing facilities."

Although it was not immediately clear what caused the mishap, confusion arose regarding which wheel was actually damaged as a Civil Aviation's statement contradicted Biman's Shakil.Flight BG 122 took off from Muscat at 4:48am (BdST) and was slated to make a stop at Chittagong airport before landing in Dhaka.

“Landing on one wheel is a very risky job,” a Biman official said. “But the pilot did a splendid job.”

The 162-seater leased aircraft landed safely at Shahjalal at 10:07am on Thursday.

A number of people complained on social media about being stuck on a plane that was stalled on the tarmac.

The emergency landing disrupted schedules of other flights, with several were delayed while others were diverted to Chittagong airport.

Operations fully resumed at Shahjalal airport around 12:30pm.
