A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order yesterday, disposing off a petition filed by the pro-BNP journalist seeking extension of a bail order that was earlier awarded by the apex court.
The court also asked the Metropolitan Magistrate Court concerned to consider his bail on surrender.
The apex court had granted him bail in August for three months or until the police submit a report in the case, which takes place first. The deadline concluded on November 30.
As the trial in the case is scheduled for December 14, he will be on bail until then, said his lawyer M Asaduzzaman. The journalist may surrender before the lower court on that date, he added.
Shafik Rehman was arrested by the police from his residence in April this year and his bail petition was rejected by the High Court in June. He later moved the apex court, which granted him bail on health grounds on condition of surrendering his passport.
