Degree was not awarded to the cat for hunting mice or sleeping but rather for its friendly behaviour

A cat named Max has been awarded an honorary "doctor of litter-ature" degree. Vermont State University announced this honour for the cat ahead of its commencement ceremony on Saturday, as reported by the US-based news agency AP.

The degree was not awarded to the cat for hunting mice or sleeping but rather for its friendly behaviour. Vermont State University's Castleton campus recognized Max for this honour.

Vermont State University shared on social media platform Facebook that Max has been a cherished member of the Castleton family for many years.

According to the AP report, the popular cat lives with a family near the campus entrance.

On Thursday, Max's owner, Ashley Dow, said that Max used to visit the campus and have fun with the college students, who adored the cat.

Regarding Max, she added that the cat became a familiar face on campus over four years. Students would be delighted to see Max, often picking up the cat to take pictures. Max even went on outdoor trips with the students.

About Max's travels, Dow said: "I do not know how Max learned to travel, but the cat did and will continue to follow the students."

Students call Dow "Max's mom." Even after graduation, when they return to town, they ask Dow about Max's well-being.

Although Max can not attend the commencement ceremony, the degree will later be handed over to Dow.
