Online videos show a red downpour streaming down a slope within the town, which has a population of around 2,000 people.

On Sunday, the streets of Sao Lorenco do Bairro in Portugal were flooded with red wine after an explosion of two wine tanks owned by a vineyard resulted in the spilling of 2.2 million litres of red wine into the tiny town.

The wine from Levira Distillery is enough to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool, forcing local officials to issue an environmental warning.

According to local media sources published by USA Today on Monday, the Anadia Fire Department rerouted the wine flow to prevent pollution of the neighbouring Certima River.

According to the New York Post, the wine then spilled into a nearby field. The publication reported firefighters as saying that a cellar of a house near the distillery was flooded with wine.

Levira Distillery posted a message on Facebook on Monday expressing "deep regret" for the event and noting that authorities are investigating its cause. There have been no reported injuries, and the distillery has committed to cover all costs involved with cleanup and restorations.

The distillery revealed to the New York Post that the wine-soaked dirt on the field has been moved to a specialized treatment facility.
