#DeleteFacebook trending as netizens rage over Cambridge Analytica scandal

People across the world are raging against Facebook, after the owner of data firm Cambridge Analytica came forward and revealed that his company had gathered information from 50 million Facebook users without permission to target voters during the 2016 US presidential election. Such has been the extent of their anger, many users are discussing deleting their Facebook account on various social media outlets.

Cambridge Analytica worked for US President Donald Trump’s campaign during the presidential election. The data-analytics company used a quiz in order to pull information not only from quiz takers, but also from other users on the quiz takers’ friend lists, reports Business Insider. The backlash over the scandal has caused “#DeleteFacebook” to trend, as people have been using it in their posts when complaining about Facebook.

WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton joined the chorus on Tuesday, as the Federal Trade Commission was reported to be investigating Facebook’s handling of personal data, The Guardian reports.

In 2014, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion. Acton continued to be associated with Facebook after the sale until he joined Signal Foundation earlier this year.
