Facebook Marketplace acts as a broad storehouse for both lost treasures and useful findings. A Wodonga resident's odd offering of a World War II Australian Army Bren Gun Carrier is one of its offerings.

Around 5,500 Bren Gun Carriers were produced in Australia between the years 1941 and 1944. Only a small number of these carriers were ever used in battle, despite being regarded as one of the country's most successful military vehicles.

Due to health difficulties and storage issues, Darrin Wright and his father are presently looking to sell their beautifully rebuilt carrier. The destroyed remnants of this battle vehicle were discovered by Darrin Wright's father in a South Australian pasture in the 1980s.

"The Eyre Peninsula boasted a well-established Ford dealership in the 1940s, '50s and '60s, and numerous farmers owned Ford trucks," recounted Wright. "A farmer had obtained this gun carrier, dismantled it and extracted its engine and gearbox to power his Ford truck at the time."

Wright's father asked if he could buy the carrier since it would have otherwise been disassembled for its parts and metal.

Darrin Wright and his father have worked tirelessly to restore the car ever since.

Despite the fact that the repair is around 80% finished, they have decided to sell the carrier because of a shed full of wartime equipment and his father's deteriorating mobility.

Wright's aspiration is to find a buyer who will finish restoring this collector's item, thereby turning the gun carrier into a functional piece of history. "Ideally, this would be suitable for a museum or a collector who intends to complete it," he remarked.

"The goal is to display it to the public, providing insight into military history, technological advancements and the vehicle itself."

The carrier maintains a significant position in Australia's manufacturing legacy in addition to its service in World War II.

Wright hopes to find a deserving caretaker for this repaired piece of military history and has set an asking price of about $60,000.

The Bren Gun Carrier, according to Nick Fletcher, director of military heraldry and technology at the Australian War Memorial, is "the most produced and successful armoured vehicle in Australian history."
