Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) National Standing Committee, has been appointed acting secretary general of the party.
The BNP announced the decision in a press release issued Thursday afternoon, saying Rizvi was appointed in accordance with Article 7(b)(6) of the party constitution. His appointment took effect immediately.
Rizvi was appointed five days after the post fell vacant following Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s resignation. Fakhrul resigned as BNP secretary general after being nominated by the party for the presidency, with the party announcing his resignation on August 13.
Rizvi has long played a prominent role in the BNP’s central politics and has regularly served as the party’s spokesperson, holding press conferences and communicating its position on various political issues.
At the BNP’s sixth national council on March 19, 2016, he was elected senior joint secretary general.
Rizvi was nominated as a member of the BNP’s National Standing Committee, the party’s highest policymaking body, on August 15, just two days before his appointment as acting secretary general.
He also served as member secretary of the BNP’s Election Management Committee during this year’s national parliamentary election, overseeing electoral activities and party organizational matters while communicating the party’s positions through the media.
Political career
Rizvi began his political career through student politics at Rajshahi University, where he became involved with the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the BNP’s student wing.
In 1989, he was elected vice-president of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSSU). He later served as president of Chhatra Dal’s central committee.
His leadership in student politics helped establish him as an organizer before he moved into the BNP’s national-level leadership.
