Reza Kibria resigns from Gono Odhikar Parishad

Dr Reza Kibria has resigned from the post of convener of a faction of the Gono Odhikar Parishad.

The party's joint convener, Colonel (Retd) Mia Mosiuzzaman, will serve as the acting convener, Dr Kibria said in a press release on Wednesday.

“I am resigning from the post of convener and have submitted my resignation letter to the Central Executive Council. Besides, I have resigned from the party membership,” he added.

In June last year, the party split into two factions, with Nurul Haque Nur leading the other part.

Son of former Awami League finance minister and lawmaker Shah AMS Kibria, Dr Reza Kibria said he joined politics after leaving the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in December 2018 and had been serving as the founding convener of Gono Odhikar Parishad since October 2021.

“Before joining politics, I worked on public policy in various countries around the world. At some point, I felt that the time had come to work for the people of my country. Such an opportunity may not come in the future. But like my father, Shah AMS Kibria, I wanted to devote myself to the service of the people.”

Dr Reza Kibria said that he would keep working with the young generation, who are working to establish democracy, social justice, and good governance in Bangladesh. “I am very optimistic about our young generation. I think the youth are slowly becoming aware of the immense potential of Bangladesh.”

He also thanked the people of the country and the media for encouraging and supporting him in the past few months. “I hope that in the coming days we will work together to establish freedom and justice in the country.”

He also expressed deep gratitude to the leaders of the Gono Odhikar Parishad for giving him the opportunity to perform his duties as the convener of the party. He said: "I feel very honoured to have worked with you for the last 2 years and 2 months."
