Chunnu: JaPa to hold multiple meetings with Awami League before polls

Jatiya Party (JaPa) Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu has expressed JaPa’s total faith in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying his party will hold several meetings with the ruling Awami League ahead of January’s election.

“From their behaviour in our last meeting, we also feel that they have confidence in us,” Chunnu told reporters on Thursday, about the prime minister’s reported comment that JaPa is not to be trusted.

“We want seats from the people, not from any political party,” the JaPa leader said referring to the sharing of seats.

“We have discussed the electoral environment with the Awami League. It is not like we have not discussed the issue you are indicating–we have discussed many a thing.”

As there is a meeting scheduled for Thursday night with the ruling party, he said: “Since the meeting is election-centric, our meetings will continue in phases up to January 7.”

Stating that voting will not take place under the government, the JaPa secretary general said the election will take place under the Election Commission. During the election period, law enforcement, administration officials and all those who are involved in election work will be under the commission, he added.
