Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami staged protest rallies in Dhaka's Motijheel and Mirpur on Friday to protest the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) refusing the party permission to conduct a rally in Suhrawardy Udyan.
Nurul Islam Bulbul, ameer of Jamaat's Dhaka city south unit, led the Motijheel procession, which ended in front of Kamalapur Railway Station.
The Mirpur rally was led by Dhaka Metropolitan North Secretary of Jamaat Dr Mohammad Rezaul Karim. It started at the Mirpur-1 roundabout with thousands of people and concluded with a gathering at the technical intersection.
Previously, Jamaat-e-Islami had to defer its Tuesday rally at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after it was unable to obtain permission from the police.
They announced the Tuesday rally on July 24 to advocate for its three-point demands, which included holding the next general national election under a caretaker government.
After being denied permission to hold the rally on Tuesday, they rescheduled it for Friday and again sought assistance from the DMP for permission to conduct a peaceful rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.
However, DMP announced on Thursday that they would not grant Jamaat the authority to hold a rally in Suhrawardy Udyan.
The rally has been delayed twice up until now.
