The Awami League and its affiliated bodies were in cautious lookout on Saturday to prevent any anarchy or violent activities planned by the BNP.
The leaders and activists took control of the Chittagong streets in various parts of the city.
The party arranged sit-in program and held gatherings in the port city's busiest areas on Saturday morning.
In a statement issued on Thursday, acting president of Chittagong Awami League Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury and General Secretary AJM Nashir Uddin directed the leaders of the city's 15 thanas, 44 organizational wards, and 132 units to be on high alert and make all necessary preparations to protect the life and property of the citizens.
They further recommended that anyone involved in suspicious activity be caught and turned over to law enforcement.
Meanwhile, the Chhatra League of the city's Chandgaon thana area conducted a protest near the Bahaddarhat intersection. City Awami League's Senior Joint Secretary and City Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury spoke at the demonstration.
In the protest program, City Mayor Rezaul karim said: “BNP intends to perform destructive activities in the nation in the guise of movement. If there is arson, as there was in 2013-14, someone will be killed, such as Tempu driver Musa, and if someone is hurt, such as schoolgirl Antu Barua, no one will be spared. I urge activists to stand up to resist parties such as Jamaat-BNP.”
Meanwhile, Awami League leaders and activists were spotted engaging with processions and showdown along with motorcycle in the city's Newmarket, Kazir Dewri, Lalkhanbazar, and GEC intersection areas. Leaders and activists from the Chhatra League took up positions at road intersections.
Md Mosraful hoque Chowdhuri, an executive member of Chittagong Metropolitan Chhatra League, who positioned at Kazi Dewri intersection, said Chhatra League activists have held a peaceful sit-in program to protest against BNP's anarchy in various places of Chittagong city.
“We will not let the BNP burn vehicles and kill people in the name of the movement. We have no problem if they demonstrate peacefully. However, if they chose the path of violence, we have positioned in several areas since the morning to avoid anarchy and arson,” he added.
From the morning, City Jubo League president aspirant MR Azim organized a sit-in program with hundreds of leaders and employees at Wasa intersection in the city.
“Those who wish to create an unstable situation in the country in the guise of defending democracy will not be granted any indulgence,” he warned.
“This is the month of victory. We, the Liberation War forces, will never give up on them. The Jubo League is and will continue to be on the field to prevent anarchy of BNP,” MR Azim added.
