The Election Commission on Monday published a gazette notification of the Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet city corporations’ polls.
According to the laws, winners of the city polls must be sworn in by the local government (city corporation) ministry within a month of the publication of the gazette.
Dr Mohammad Sadik, EC secretary, said the EC published the result after collecting and scrutinising the election data.
He said the EC had asked the Bangladesh Government press on Monday afternoon to print the gazette of results of the four city polls.
The secretary said the returning officers sent all the election data to the EC in time. The EC analysed the data before publishing the gazette. He explained that this was why it has taken a little more time than usual to publish the gazette.
Earlier, the chief election commissioner, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Thursday said the EC had encountered no issues with publishing the gazette and would do so, after scrutinising the election results. “There is no legal complication with publishing the gazette,” Kazi said.
The tenure of the four city corporations will expire in October, so the newly elected mayors and councilors cannot assume power before then.
According to the Local Government Act, section-6, the five-year tenure of a city corporation begins from the first meeting. Accordion to section-34 of the Act, the election must be held within six months of the expiration of the existing tenure. Section-7(2) says newly elected mayors and councillors must take their oaths within a month.
