BNP welcomes PM’s decision to dissolve parliament in October

The main opposition BNP observed the Prime Minister’s decision to dissolve the parliament on October 25 as “positive”, but decided not to make any comment right away.

“Various media reported that the Prime Minister said the parliament will be dissolved on October 25. If she meant it, then it’s positive. However, we will not make any comment right now, as Awami League leaders are inconsistent about their comments,” a standing committee member of BNP, who requested to be anonymous, told Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.

He said, BNP have discussed the issue at the party’s standing committee meeting, but did not reach any concrete decision, as the Prime Minister is yet to make a public announcement.

Khaleda Zia chaired the committee meeting, which started at 8.30pm at her Gulshan office to analyse the current political scenario and to devise the next course of action.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 6 at Awami League’s parliamentary meeting said the last day of the ninth Parliament would be October 25, and the next general election would be held under the interim government in ways similar to those of other countries with parliamentary democracy.

The incumbent grand alliance government formed the government on January 25 following a landslide victory in the national election, held in 2008.

As per constitutional provisions, election would be held before 90 days from 24 January, 2014.

The party also decided to observe the month of Ramadan as an organisational month to strengthen the party’s activities, said a senior leader, who also requested anonymity.

He also said the party will finalise its next course of action after seeing the government’s attitude towards the four city corporation polls scheduled for June 15.
