The Awami League is planning to organize its 22nd National Council to elect new leaders in December, the general secretary of the ruling party has said.
Obaidul Quader made the suggestion on Saturday during an event at the party headquarters in Dhaka.
“We hold the council every three years, so the next one falls in December. We are making preparations,” said Quader, the road transport and bridges minister.
He asked the different units of the party to complete their councils before the national council.
The senior Awami League leader said the next general election and the upcoming council are two of the important issues on the party’s slate.
“I urge all the units to intensify member recruitment and renewal of membership,” he said.
“Smarter” leaders will emerge through the national council, Quader hoped.
The previous national council of the Awami League was held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka in December 2019 to elect its central leadership.
