The country will observe the fourth death anniversary of 19th president of Bangladesh Mohammed Zillur Rahman on Monday with due solemnity.
Prominently remembered for his leadership in the Awami League, Zillur was the first president to die of natural causes while in office.
Remembering the senior leader, Awami League Presidium Member Abdur Razzak said Zillur took charge of the party when Sheikh Hasina was arrested after 1/11.
“He kept the nation and the party united during a difficult time and led Awami League to win the 2008 election,” he added.
Calling Zillur a tested, experienced and loyal leader, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said he showed extraordinary leadership and courage during times of crises, particularly after 1/11 when there was enormous pressure on the party.
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader urged activists and leaders of all party affiliates and like-minded organisations to observe the day with due respect.
The party will pay tribute to the great leader at his grave in Dhaka's Banani graveyard at 8am. Special prayers will also be held there.
In the afternoon, special prayers will be held at his house in Gulshan.
