Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that she believes the people will vote Awami League to power again in the next general election for the sake of continuation of the development trend currently ongoing in the country.
"I believe that the people of Bangladesh will make Awami League victorious by voting in favour of 'boat' symbol in the next election too and let the development trend continue," she said on Saturday while addressing the first meeting of the 11th National Election Conducting Committee of the ruling party.
The meeting, with committee Chairman Hasina in the chair, was held at her official residence, Ganabhaban, in the evening, reports UNB.
The prime minister said that Awami League was able to keep up its popularity despite remaining in power for the two consecutive terms, which she dubbed a rare instance.
She said that it was possible for the ruling party to maintain public confidence and trust as it was working truly for the development of the people and taken the benefit of the development to the grassroots level.
She also hinted that there was also no possibility of any kind of army intervention in power. “So there is no benefit for anyone in waiting with such hope.”
Hasina, who is also the president of Awami League, said that there was frantic effort to resist the 2014 national polls, but the people re-elected her party by casting their votes and resisting the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition.
"Since Awami League has been in power for nine and a half consecutive years, now the development Bangladesh has achieved is visible to all. It is proved now that if Awami League remains in power, the country progresses," she said.
The prime minister said that her government was working in a planned way and taking Bangladesh forward in different socio-economic indexes, including poverty reduction, health, education and power.
’BNP is spreading propaganda’
Mentioning that the BNP-Jamaat alliance was spreading propaganda, Sheikh Hasina said that BNP resorted to falsehood over its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's visit to the US by claiming UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres invited him.
"There is no limit to their falsehood and deception," she said, adding that it was learnt that Fakhrul also met Guterres, even though the latter was in Ghana to attend the funeral of former UN secretary general Kofi Anan.
She said that an assistant secretary general of the UN confirmed that Guterres did not invite Fakhrul, rather the BNP leaders had sought appointment.
Hinting towards BNP, the prime minister also urged the people to be alert always against those who destroyed, stole and siphoned the country's property off Bangladesh, embezzled the money of orphans, killed the people through arson attacks as they would destroy the country.
