Speaker confirms Misty’s resignation

National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram has confirmed receiving the resignation letter of BNP reserved-seat MP Ferdousi Ahmed Misty.

He said her resignation took effect immediately upon receipt of the letter, in accordance with the Constitution. The resignation letter will be sent to the Election Commission after the relevant gazette is issued, he added.

The Speaker made the remarks while speaking to reporters in the Parliament tunnel on Thursday.

At an emergency press conference, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram said Ferdousi, MP for reserved women’s seat No 23, came to his office and submitted her resignation in writing.

“Under the constitutional provisions, her seat became vacant as soon as we received the letter. We will send it to the Election Commission. The resignation will take effect from Thursday,” he said.

Asked whether the resignation letter stated a reason, the Speaker said MPs are not required to mention any reason when submitting their resignation.
