A special anti-mosquito drive has been launched simultaneously in eight wards of Sylhet as part of an initiative to build a “Clean City, Green City.”
The campaign, undertaken by the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), began in Wards 1, 2, 4, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 on Saturday. The corporation’s Public Health Department is carrying out the operation, which will gradually be expanded to all wards of the city.
The drive was formally inaugurated at 3:00 pm at Nayasarak by SCC’s Administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, who attended the event as the chief guest.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, he said the people of the country had given the BNP the mandate to govern, and that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had entrusted him with the responsibility of serving the residents of Sylhet. He pledged to carry out his duties with sincerity and dedication.
“To build a clean and beautiful city, we are placing special emphasis on mosquito control, as residents are suffering a lot from mosquito infestation. I want to bring relief to the people from this ordeal,” he said, noting that the special drive was launched within three days of his assumption of office on February 25.
Seeking cooperation from local residents, the administrator said a clean city cannot be achieved without public support. He urged residents not to dump waste on roads or into drains, warning that the corporation alone cannot maintain cleanliness if indiscriminate littering continues. He requested citizens to dispose of garbage in designated places so that SCC workers can collect it efficiently.
He also called on business owners to refrain from throwing waste onto streets and instead use dustbins, from which city corporation vehicles will collect the garbage.
Among others present at the programme were SCC Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rezai Rafin Sarkar, Chief Engineer Md Ali Akbar, Chief Health Officer Dr Md Zahidul Islam, and Acting Public Relations Officer Nehar Ranjan Purkayastha.
