Man gets life term for kidnapping college girl in Jamalpur

A Jamalpur court on Thursday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for kidnapping a college girl about five years ago. Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 (District and Sessions Judge) delivered the verdict.

The convicted individual, Md Nadim Ahmed, also known as Apel (25), son of Arju Mia, hails from Paschim Banshibeltail village in Melandah Upazila of Jamalpur.

After examining nine witnesses and relevant documents, the Judge found him guilty under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Tk 100,000. Additionally, under Section 7 of the same Act, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined another Tk 100,000. Both sentences will run concurrently, totaling Tk 200,000 in fines.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Md Fazlul Haque confirmed the sentence, stating that Nadim Ahmed will serve life imprisonment and pay the combined fine.

According to Public Prosecutor Md Fazlul Haque, the convict had been harassing a 17-year-old girl from the same area of Melandah Upazila. Her parents later transferred her to a college in Jamalpur town to protect her.

On March 7, 2021, Nadim abducted the girl while she was returning home from her private tutor’s house in a microbus. The police rescued the girl and arrested Nadim in Dhaka six days later, subsequently filing charges against him.

The case was prosecuted by Public Prosecutor Advocate Md Fazlul Haque, while the defense was represented by Advocate Md Kamal Hossain with assistance from Advocates Rafiqul Islam Julhas, Md Nazrul Islam, and Habiba Sultana.
