A 17-year-old boy was hacked to death by another teenager in Sherpur’s Nalitabari upazila on Saturday following a dispute over a reaction to a Facebook post.

The victim was adentified as Abu Naim, son of Ismail Hossain from the Nayabil area, said Officer-in-Charge Sohel Rana of Nalitabari police station.

Following the incident, a critically injured Naim was rushed to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex, OC Rana added.

As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors later declared him dead, the OC said.

Locals caught the suspect Sabuj Mia, 18, of Andharupara and handed him over to the police, he added.

According to police and local sources, Sabuj, who had been living in Gazipur, had returned home for the Eid holidays.

The altercation between the two teens began about a month ago when Naim reacted to one of Sabuj’s Facebook posts with a "haha" emoji, which led to a heated argument over Messenger, they said.

On Saturday, when Sabuj saw Naim at Nayabil Bazar, he attacked him with a knife, stabbing him in the chest, they added.

Legal proceedings are underway regarding the matter, said OC Rana.
