Students staged a protest by locking the gate and demanding the withdrawal of a letter from the Ministry of Education regarding the on-campus Honours program at National University and called for the continuation of educational activities in a well-defined manner.
On Tuesday, students from various colleges and universities gathered in front of the main gate of National University.
Around 9am, they locked the main gate of the university and began their protest.
They continued the blockade for nearly four hours until 1pm.
During the protest, the demonstrators allowed the university's Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Registrar to enter, but denied entry to other faculty, staff and employees.
As a result, teachers, officers, and staff were unable to enter the campus. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and attempted to control the situation. Eventually, the Vice-Chancellor held a meeting with the protesting students to discuss the situation. In the meeting, a four-member committee was formed by the university to address the students' demands.
National University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr ASM Amanullah, said that a productive discussion had taken place with the students.
To resolve the issue, a four-member committee was formed, headed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Lutfor Rahman.
The committee has been asked to submit a report on the students’ demands within the next seven days.
The other members of the committee include Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Nurul Islam, Registrar Molla Mahfuz Al Hossain and Dean Professor Dr Md Abuddardda.
The protesting students, including Tahmid Al Zunaid, said that National University authorities had not yet taken any steps regarding the on-campus Honors admission circular for the 2024-25 session.
Furthermore, various rumors regarding the admission circular for students and the third batch of Honors students were being spread among the students.
They also mentioned that the Ministry of Education had not taken any effective action to withdraw the letter issued against the students' interests.
Therefore, they demanded a clear announcement to meet their demands immediately.
