A man was beaten to death on suspicion of robbery in the Araihazar upazila of Narayanganj, on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Md Billal, 45.
A 25-year-old woman was also injured in the mob attack.
The incident occurred at around 10:30pm in the Kahendi village of Highjadi union.
Billal Hossain, the deceased, was a resident of Narandi village in Highjadi union.
The injured woman, also a resident of the same union, is currently undergoing treatment at the Araihazar upazila health complex.
Confirming the incident, Narayanganj Senior Assistant Police Superintendent (G-Circle) Mehedi Islam said: “The deceased, Billal, was a listed robber gang leader. He had at least nine cases, including murder and robbery, filed against him at Araihazar police station. The injured woman is an accomplice of Billal.”
According to the police and eyewitness accounts, around 10–12, unfamiliar individuals were spotted near the house of a local resident, Zakir Hossain, in the Kahendi area that night.
When the villagers chased them, Billal was caught, while the others managed to flee.
Billal was beaten to death on the spot by the villagers.
The woman at the scene was also beaten by the villagers on suspicion of being a robber.
To escape the mob, she jumped into a nearby pond.
Later, the villagers rescued her and handed her over to the police.
The police admitted her to the Araihazar Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Enayet Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Araihazar police station, said: “After the initial inquest, Billal’s body has been sent to the morgue of the 100-bed General Hospital in Narayanganj for autopsy. No case has been filed regarding the incident as of 1:30pm today (Friday).”
