Traffic on the Bandarban-Ruma road has been halted due to the collapse of a deck plate of a Bailey bridge.
The incident occurred around 8am on Sunday in the Kaikhyang Jhiri area of the road.
Transport workers reported that all vehicular movement on the Bandarban-Ruma road has been suspended since the collapse, causing vehicles to become stranded on both sides of the bridge.
As a result, passengers are facing significant inconvenience.
Abu Bakr, a lineman from the Ruma Transport Workers' Union, said: "The Bailey bridge in the Kaikhyang Jhiri area collapsed around 8am when a heavy vehicle was crossing it. Currently, passengers are crossing the damaged bridge on foot and switching vehicles to continue their journeys."
Nazrul Islam, Executive Engineer of the Bandarban Roads and Highways Division, said: "The collapsed Bailey bridge falls under the jurisdiction of the 26 ECB (Engineering Construction Battalion). From what I’ve heard, they have already started repair work."
He added that efforts are being made to restore the bridge and resume traffic as quickly as possible.
