Due to the cessation of upstream mountain floods and minimal rainfall, the water levels in the main rivers of Netrokona have started to recede slowly from Sunday.
However, the water of the Uddakhali River is still flowing 29cm above the danger level at the Kalmakanda point in the district.
Earlier, continuous rainfall over the past few days and mountain floods from upstream had flooded hundreds of villages in the low-lying areas of Durgapur, Kalmakanda, Purbadhala, and Barhatta upazilas. Homes, roads, and educational institutions in these areas were submerged.
Thousands of hectares of Aman paddy and fish farms were submerged. As water entered many homes, families took refuge with their livestock in shelters, at relatives' houses, or on higher grounds such as bridges.
Due to the flood, 186 government primary schools in the district were declared closed.
Abdul Karim, a resident of Shuknakuri village in Kakairgora Union of Durgapur Upazila, said: "Homes, fish from ponds, and Aman paddy have been submerged. If the water remains for a few more days, there is little hope of recovering anything."
Aminul Islam, another resident of the same area, said: "Though the water is slowly receding from the homes, the suffering is increasing. Water has not yet fully drained from the roads. Additionally, many people still have water inside their homes, forcing them to stay in shelters."
