Seven jailed for looting Gazi Tyres factory

Seven individuals have been arrested and sentenced to seven days in jail by a mobile court for looting the Gazi Tyres factory in Rupganj, Narayanganj, which was set on fire last month.

The arrests were made by the police and army during looting on Sunday.

The seven who were arrested and sentenced are Abdus Sattar, 22, Khorshed Alam, 21, Ibrahim, 25, Mahbub Hossain, 35, Siraj, 32, Motalib, 48, and Sumon, 30.

Rupganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Saiful Islam confirmed the matter.

The fire at Gazi Tyres broke out on August 25 at around 10:30pm and continued for 32 hours. Despite the efforts of 12 fire service units, the fire reignited multiple times.

Looting reportedly began amid the fire, leading to further destruction. Local sources suggest that the fire may have started due to a clash between two groups over the looting of factory materials.

Fire service officials have said no human remains were found using drone cameras or ladders, and a search of the basement yielded no additional findings.

A Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) team noted that the building's third, fourth, and fifth floors had collapsed, making further rescue efforts too dangerous.

Following a public hearing on September 1, the district administration's investigation team compiled a list of 78 missing persons.

On the same day, relatives claimed to have found skull fragments and bones in the damaged building, which were handed over to the police.

In the wake of confusion surrounding the missing persons list, the fire service had initially listed 174 missing individuals. Subsequently, students compiled a new list of 121 missing persons.

The district administration has set up a control room to verify names and will release a comprehensive list after confirmation. An eight-member investigation committee has been formed to submit its report within 10 working days.
